Trade Job Blog - Men's Health Tips - Men's Health Month - Ready Mix Drivers

Are you interested in learning a new trade? For many individuals, the hands-on learning and in-demand experience of a trade job are more rewarding than attending a four-year college and climbing the corporate ladder. If you are considering a trade job, we encourage you to check out our ready mix driver positions at Shelby Materials. With 12 locations throughout Central Indiana and more than 70 years of experience in concrete and aggregates, we can provide you with a career you’ll love.

What is a trade job?

A trade job is one that requires training beyond high school but generally doesn’t require a Bachelor’s degree. In some trade jobs, you may benefit from attending a vocational school or community college. In others, you might have on-the-job training that you can apply as you move up within the company or in your career. Most trade jobs also include a physical element or necessitate working with your hands. Trade jobs are quite lucrative right now and the in-demand skills you learn will benefit you for years to come.

Becoming a ready mix driver

The primary trade job at Shelby Materials is the position of ready mix driver. Our drivers’ role is to deliver ready mix concrete and various aggregate materials to residential and commercial job sites in the local area. At Shelby, we require our job applicants to be at least 19 years old, with a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement, and a clean driving record with no DUI/DWI/OWI in the last 5 years. A Class B CDL allows the holder to operate any single vehicle (without a trailer) that weighs 26,000 pounds or more, and a Class A CDL includes any combination of vehicles over 26,000 pounds, such as semis/tractor-trailers.

Gaining first-hand experience

With other careers, you may have to work your way up the corporate ladder, starting in a low-paying position without much hands-on experience. But with a trade job like ready mix driver, you’ll start gaining relevant experience right away. And at Shelby Materials, we don’t require our applicants to have a history of professional driving, because our in-house orientation program pairs up senior-level drivers with new employees during their training period.

Safety-minded attitude

The physical labor of a trade job is inherently a little more hazardous than a desk job. However, at Shelby, safety is of the utmost importance for our drivers. In addition to our top-notch training, we provide drivers with PPE, safety equipment and high visibility workwear. Our fleet of Oshkosh Advance front discharge mixer trucks are of the highest quality, equipped with the latest technology in real-time GPS tracking, backup cameras and HID headlights. When you work for Shelby Materials, you can trust that one of our main objectives is for all employees to return home safe and healthy at the end of the workday.

Trade job benefits you care about

Safety goes hand-in-hand with health and wellness, so one of the main benefits of working with Shelby Materials is our low-premium health insurance with an employer-matching HSA and guaranteed-payout wellness participation program. You’ll also enjoy competitive hourly pay with overtime, a 401(k) retirement plan with the industry’s highest employer match and paid holidays/vacation days.
